Weight Management

Obesity is an epidemic in today’s world and a chronic condition that affects at least one in three adults. Being overweight will increase your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver disease, stroke, kidney disease, and other health issues. You have the constant temptation to eat nutritiously poor and calorie-dense food, and overeating is also a cause of weight gain. People struggle with weight management because of the easy availability of fast food joints to foods filled with unhealthy ingredients. It is easier to grab unhealthy food than to fix something healthy.
Physical activity is also lacking for many people, and a sedentary lifestyle is becoming a normal way of life. Due to these issues, many people struggle to control their weight. However, physical activity can help you manage weight by using the excess calories stored as fat. Engaging in physical activities is essential for good health and extremely important if you want to maintain a healthy weight.
When losing weight, your physical activity increases the number of calories your body uses for energy. Calorie burning through physical activity combined with reducing the number of calories you eat will create a calorie deficit resulting in weight loss.
You can take care of your weight by examining your lifestyle, nutritional choices, and environment. Functional medicine can also give you a boost to take control of your weight management. In addition, regular exercise, a healthy lifestyle practice, and eating nutrient-dense foods will help impact your overall health. Here at Studio R Aesthetics, we can assess your baseline and implement a course of diet and exercise that works for you.

Weight Loss

Dr. Segura is proud to be the first aesthetics provider in Charlottesville to offer weight loss treatment with semaglutide, an FDA-approved medication that can significantly reduce unwanted fat. Semaglutide is a once a week subcutaneous injection that suppresses appetite and hunger cravings through the appetite center in the brain. This means that patients taking semaglutide feel full earlier in a meal so they eat fewer calories. It also suppresses cravings so that you are less likely to eat the types of food that lead to weight gain that contain high levels of simple carbohydrates and unhealthy fats.Ā

Semaglutide is a generic medication that works the same way as Wegovy, which has been used in diabetics to reduce weight for more than 10 years.Ā

There is a considerable amount of data supporting the safety and effectiveness of semaglutide. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study using a cross-over model, 30 patients who took semaglutide lost an average of 11 pounds over 12 weeks doing nothing other than taking semaglutide – they did not change their diet or activity level. The patients who took placebo actually gained a small amount of weight. The majority of weight lost was body fat, not lean muscle mass.

  • Double-blind means that neither the treating physician or patient knew if the patient was taking semaglutide or placebo.

  • Placebo-controlled means that one group received semaglutide and the other group received an inactive compound that has no effect on the body.

  • Cross-over model means that the patients who were first assigned to placebo were switched to semaglutide after the initial 12 weeks and vice versa. This ensures that the effects observed are the result of the medication being studied and is not related to the patient population.

See figure 4 in this article Effects of once-weekly semaglutide on appetite, energy intake, control of eating, food preference and body weight in subjects with obesity

The ideal candidate has 10 or more pounds of unwanted body fat that they have had difficulty losing through diet and exercise alone. Patients who have frequent cravings or are prone to binge eating or emotional eating would greatly benefit from semaglutide treatment. Patients do not have to be dieting or exercising, but these activities make semaglutide more effective through a variety of mechanisms.

The most common side effects of semaglutide include nausea and constipation. Patients should also make an effort to limit alcohol consumption.

The first treatment with semaglutide starts at $700 for a vial that lasts 10 weeks. Dr. Segura walks you through the process of administering a subcutaneous injection so that you are able to perform these at home each week without coming back into the office. Patients have the option of coming into the office for subsequent injections at no additional cost.

This is a patient testimonial about semaglutide treatment with Dr. Segura:

ā€œI have been on a weight loss treatment from Studio R Aesthetics. My starting weight was 136ā€¦I am now 125ā€¦ in only 4 WEEKS. (I am 5ā€™3, and was borderline overweight for my height).

The treatment I am on is called Semaglutide. Semaglutide reduces insulin secretion. It is also known to reduce body weight and body fat mass through lowered food intake or reduced appetite.

With my issue of constant binge eating, this treatment has taught me how to eat things that will actually benefit my body, get the nutrition I need, and be full quickly enough to where I donā€™t even feel the want or need to see what else is in my fridge at all hours of the night.

Iā€™ll just say that I am absolutely MIND BLOWN at these results after only 4 weeks. My jaw is dropped. SAME JEANS. Not edited.

I have been insecure about my weight for I donā€™t even know how long. So insecure that I would say no to certain things in the summer with friends and started wearing only sweatshirts because I was so ashamed. This is life changing for me. Thank you Brandy Segura, finally starting to feel confident and see myself in the mirror again. ā€
